History

Over the years the site at Seven Brethren has had a variety of different purposes, however in more recent history it was repurposed as the North Devon Leisure Centre, until they relocated to another nearby site. Constructing on a site with a varied history such as this one can present unique challenges, but their successful development highlights that even the most unassuming sites can have huge and exciting potential.

Our Vision

Our plan is to develop this brownfield site into a 328 space-long stay carpark, providing a much-needed increase in parking capacity for the town of Barnstaple. It will be undertaken in partnership with North Devon Council and will begin with the demolition of the old North Devon Leisure Centre. It will be built with a sustainability first approach, reusing crushed concrete from the demolition to form part of the car park’s working platform. The trees that will be removed to facilitate development will also be chipped and used for habitat enhancement. This approach reduces waste and minimizes the environmental impact of the construction.

Progress

The car park has now been completed and is in use by the local community. The site was located near to the usual location of the Barnstaple Fair; a local annual traditional, and so particular care has been taken to ensure that this event was not compromised. The fair will continue to go ahead in September of this year.

Key benefits

  • Creating much-needed parking capacity for the town of Barnstaple
  • A focus on sustainability with the use of recycled materials to minimize waste and environmental impacts
  • Community was a key consideration, ensuring important local events weren’t compromised by the development

The location

The car park is on Severn Brethren Bank in the Seven Brethren area of Barnstaple, a town in North Devon. It is close to the banks of the River Taw which runs through Barnstaple and meets the Sea at the nearby coastline of Saunton Sands.
