Sandhill Park Mansion
Sandhill Park is a grand Grade II* Listed Mansion House, located on the edge of the Quantock Hills in Somerset, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Alongside the main house there are beautiful historic barns, stables and walled gardens.
Sandhill park was built around 1720 by John II Periam and kept as a private residence until 1913; it was originally called “Hill House”. During World War I the house was used as a prisoner of war camp for German and Austrian Officers, before being converted into a home for children with disabilities in 1919. In 1940 it was requisitioned by the military becoming the 41st General Military hospital and was then leased to America as a neurological hospital in 1941. The hospital remained in military use until 1945. In 1948 it was reopened as a psychiatric hospital under the National Health Service.
The hospital was sold in 1991. On 22nd November 2011, the house was badly burnt by a fire, which was caused by arson. This, along with water damage, resulted in extensive damage to the East wing, roof and top floor of the building.
We have completed a significant programme of emergency works to stabilise the Mansion House, repairing damage to the structure and facade of the building - whilst preventing any further damage from the elements. Following this important work the plan is to convert the Mansion House into multiple unique apartments, with the benefits of a beautiful location and outdoor space with each home.
Extensive renovations to the front Portico included new timber roof frame with new leadwork, and restoration of the original stonework.
Works to replace absent lead from the roof and slate in certain areas have been completed, transforming Sandhill Park Mansion.
With the newly renovated front Portico and restructured East Bay Window, the beautiful stonework detailing can be clearly seen once more.
Completed Restoration
As part of the emergency works programme, restructuring of the collapsed East Bay Window has been completed. New leadwork and masonry has been finalised along with repairs to the original stonework.
